Tis the season to be merry! There's nothing like donning your fave Christmas jumper and Santa hat to get into the festive spirit. Add a sprinkle of snow and you'll no doubt have that special glow that would rival jolly old Saint Nick himself.

Here are some portraits I created with a friend to capture the spirit of Christmas. We took a trip to the snowy mountain resort of Zakopane in Poland too get into the right setting. After all, why settle for an artificial winter wonderland when you can go on holiday and experience the real thing.

The place was buzzing with holiday vibes, perfect for snapping some awesome portraits. We grabbed our fancy cameras, a bunch of lenses, a flash, and a load of festive clothing, and got ready to capture some festive shots. Check out how they turned out!

A Winter Wonderland of Christmas Portraits

Winter has a way of enveloping the world in a blanket of enchantment. Everywhere we turned, there was an amazing location to take a photograph. Against some pine trees - Or by a log cabin wall? Why not? The beauty of taking outdoor portraits abroad is that everywhere is new to you. Even better when set against a serene backdrop of a snow-covered landscape.

Tip one - Find the finer details in a winter forest

The contrast between the vibrant reds and greens of the Christmas jumper and hat against the pristine white snow creates a visually striking scene. The bold colours not only stand out prominently but also evoke a sense of warmth and festivity against the cold, wintry backdrop.

This juxtaposition of colours not only adds visual interest but also conveys a feeling of joy and celebration. The bright hues seem to come alive against the snowy canvas, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the image. It's fascinating how a simple choice of colours can transform a winter landscape into a lively and cheerful setting, capturing the essence of the holiday season in a single frame.

The snow in the forest transformed the landscape into a magical fairytale setting! Check out the three shots above - each one featuring the same outfit but exuding a unique vibe. The secret? We paid close attention to the little details. See how the snow delicately clings to the tree's side, creating the ideal hide-and-seek spot. A touch of frost in the model's hair, and voilà - behold the enchanting outcome!

Tip two - Break the rules of white balance

This image required a little extra technical skill. See how the background is cool and blue, while the model shines with warm tones? The trick here is to think outside the box and play with white balance settings. Set your WB to fluorescent, then illuminate your subject with a steady orange light. You'll then be able to craft a scene just like the one above!

Don't forget to set the mood! In this instance, we added a candle to infuse the scene with a cozy warmth.

Don't fret if you don't have a candle nearby! Your outfit choice can bring the warmth instead. Building on our previous technique, we decided to zoom in. The fluffy fur lining the model's hood forms a snug frame amidst the falling snow, perfectly complementing the chilly trees in the backdrop. How cozy and stylish!?

Using the model's body and clothes to create a frame is so much fun! Just look at this image - her eyes are playfully sandwiched between the scarf and fur lining of her hood. And check out how the shape of her arms effortlessly point in a triangle towards her face. It's all about creativity and style!

Tip three - Consider leading lines

Have you heard about leading lines? They are an amazing compositional technique in photography that uses lines to effortlessly guide the viewer's eye through the image straight to the subject or an important focal point! These lines can be found in nature or created by humans, and come in all sorts of forms: straight, curved, horizontal, vertical, or even diagonal!

Keep your eyes wide open for any frost on surfaces that you can incorporate in the foreground just like the example above!

Capture your observer's attention with the power of this compositional technique! Seek out the dynamic lines within your surroundings that can elevate your composition.

Perched atop a snowy hill, we stumbled upon a charming wooden fence just waiting to play a role in our scene. By positioning the model on it, the leading lines effortlessly draw the viewer's gaze towards her arms, ultimately leading to her captivating face.

As an incredible bonus, we were treated to a stunning sunset that perfectly complemented the glowing Christmas lights in the background!

Leading lines don't always have to be in the foreground - get creative and incorporate them behind your subject as well. Just take a look at how the model effortlessly leaned against a rustic wooden log cabin, letting the gaps form dynamic lines that draw the eye towards her.

This clever technique not only makes her stand out prominently in the scene but also captivates the observer, demanding their full attention.

Having trouble spotting leading lines in your scene? No worries! Create your own! Check out this amazing image where we used gold tinsel decoration. I, as the photographer, extended one end out of the frame. The mix of a blurred foreground and a leading line guiding to the subject truly enhances the depth of the photo.

And guess what? We also stumbled upon a breath-taking scene with a log cabin, a winter wonderland forest, and majestic mountains, offering a picture-perfect backdrop! How exciting!

Tip four - Frame your model

During our travels, we were absolutely fortunate to stumble upon a myriad of outdoor decorations on Gubalowka Hill just waiting to be incorporated into our photos.

Look at how the model is beautifully framed by the enchanting bokeh lights of the Christmas decoration archway! This framing not only enhances symmetry but also emphasizes her significance in the scene. If you're eager to replicate this magical effect, seek out outdoor decorations that will bring a touch of elegance and harmony to your image!

The natural world is bursting with exciting framing opportunities! Picture this: as we strolled through the breathtaking Tatra National Park, our eyes were drawn to majestic snow-covered pine trees. Suddenly, our model leaped into action, positioning herself in the path's center, harnessing the power of diagonal lines that elegantly guided the viewer's gaze towards her.

To intensify this captivating effect, we skillfully incorporated more triangles into her pose. Just look at how her crossed legs mirror the trees' direction and how her arms gracefully point towards her face. Amazing, right?

Pathways are absolutely fantastic spots to discover when you're looking to beautifully showcase your subject! In this particular instance, we utilised vibrant festive decorations  found on each side, perfectly enveloping the model in the centre.

Tip five - Defocus the foreground

Imagine your model standing against a backdrop of snow covered Christmas trees. Now picture a few branches out of focus adding a sense of depth to your image. Have a play with this approach and open your aperture wide to defocus the foreground.

Imagine your model striking a pose in front of a magical winter wonderland filled with snow-covered Christmas trees. While sounds exciting, envision a few branches intentionally blurred in the foreground. This will create a captivating sense of depth in your photograph.

Get creative with this technique and don't be afraid to widen your aperture.

Tip six - Have fun!

The art of Christmas photography is not just about capturing images; it's about capturing emotions and moments that transcend the ordinary. It's always wise to capture a diverse range of styles and moods, from glamorous attire to cozy winter wear, each portrait a unique reflection of the individual's spirit and style.

Remember, Christmas is a time for fun and laughter. Let this show in your images. Create a vibe with your model that radiates pure fun and happiness. Watch that infectious energy come alive through your camera lens!

As you can see, the model and I were making the most of our holiday escapade. Zakopane is a magical place that truly brings out the festive spirit in everyone who steps foot there!
