How is Photography relevant to marketing/communications?
While not usually required in job descriptions for marcoms roles, photography is highly useful as a transferable skill. The talent often comes in handy when creating content for web, social media, newsletters, press and even hardcopy publications.
These skills will help to save on the cost of stock photography websites. They will also ensure that images are relevant to certain campaigns.
Images can be gathered as stock from events (or other situations) for future use. Scroll this page to see how your organisation can benefit from this transferable talent,
Post Production Samples
Both examples below display an expertise in Adobe Photoshop. This is extremely useful when editing for graphic design or general comms purposes (web, social media, newsletters etc).

Notice the difference in the model's eyes and cheeks. Dodging techniques were used to help them stand out and boost the attractive, feminine appearance. The lighting was edited using Levels and Curves as well as Brightness and Contrast tools.
Finally, parts of the image were sharpened (around the face) before the edition of overlays for snow and bokeh balls. The latter ensured the festive, party feeling intended in the planning stages.
Due care was used in altering the contrast, especially as the picture was converted to black and white. You will notice that there is a healthy mixture of black, white and grey tones throughout the frame.
To fit with the Halloween theme, an overlay of a dusty and scratched negative was added (look closely). In addition, rough edges were used to exacerbate the feeling of horror. The image was finally converted back to colour before the addition of a subtle blue/cyan tone.
Animated Gifs
Animated gifs are extremely useful in attracting attention on social media. With the right message and planning,
a gif will help to increase engagement and gain a wider reach for your brand.
These gifs would created using in camera video features and Adobe Photoshop techniques. In addition to moving images, slide show gifs of still frames can easily be created.

Behind the Scenes Samples
The images below will give you an idea of how all shoots are pre-planned, researched and require innovation. View the behind the scenes shots on the left to see how technical knowledge and creative thinking was used.

If you can't find the right weather conditions, make them! Artificial snow was a key prop in this image. However, there wasn't enough available. Therefore white tissue paper was placed at the very back of the frame (out of focus) to avoid any appearance of the wooden table below.
A macro extension tube was used to ensure the extreme close up. The photo was later edited in Adobe Photoshop to create the retro, faded appearance.

Believe it or not, this picture was shot in daylight. The subjects were placed near a window for the main source of light. A traditional black backdrop was not needed. A technical understanding of lighting already dictated that the background would appear dark.
This image was shot using a wide aperture (F1.8) to create the bokeh ball effect. The reflection was created using white paper underneath a sheet of glass.

Close up views of curves in the snow make for an interesting dynamic. This allows for new worlds to be created when you think small rather than big.
The stars were set on a balcony railing. To avoid them being silhouetted from the heavy light source behind, a TTL flash (with dome diffuser) was needed.

Portraits
Portrait photography doesn't begin and end with the click of a shutter. A strong level of interpersonal and organisational skills are needed. Notably to help subjects feel relaxed, safe, happy and ready to follow commands.
Years of experience helped these individuals to pose as intended (none were professional models). To do this, hand gestures to help with movement of heads, eyes, shoulders etc was used.
In addition, the best vantage points were often utilised (standing on chairs etc). This view can be especially complimentary for the models' eyes.
Research for inspiration was used for all photographs.
Christmas Still Life
Making smaller worlds requires a huge level of creative thinking. See the 'behind the scenes' above for examples. Like portraiture, these still life shots involved pre-planning and research. You will also notice the post production techniques used in Adobe Photoshop.
The creation of still life photographs comes especially handy when creating posts for future trends on social media (eg #DryJanuary etc).
Street Photography - Rain
Street/Candid photography is extremely difficult and requires a lot of patience and experience. This set is a series based on peoples' behaviour during the rain. All photos were converted to black and white using Adobe Photoshop.
Expertise in capturing candid style pictures is useful for depicting corporate events (see below).
Corporate Events
You've probably seen a lot of corporate photos of senior staff shaking hands at events. While these images are necessary, they don't capture the full flavour of these outings.
The above style shows a full range of people and items captured. This helps to present a better flavour of how the event was for the people there.
Skills as an entertainer are often needed, notably when shooting group portraits. Knowledge and friendly assertiveness helps this to be less of a challenge.
At every event, images are captured for potential stock for future campaigns.
